What to Watch For

Signs You Need Skylight Installation in Denver

At 5,280 feet, Denver's UV runs 25% more intense than at sea level. Combine that with 300 sunny days, winter humidity as low as 14%, and daily temperature swings of 70°F, and you have a climate that tests every painted surface.

01

Peeling & Cracking

Paint peeling near windows and drywall nail pops are Denver's calling card. Dramatic temperature swings cause wood framing to expand and contract, popping nails and opening hairline cracks behind the paint film.

02

Water Stains & Moisture

Ceiling water stains from roof ice dams are common in Denver winters. When moisture penetrates behind paint, it creates conditions for mold and structural degradation that a fresh coat alone won't fix.

03

Fading & Yellowing

South-facing walls take the hardest hit from high-altitude UV. Surfaces that look manageable in October can fail significantly by March. If you see discoloration or soft texture, call before you schedule. You may need surface remediation first.

Skylight Installation
FAQ

Can't find the answer? Get in touch and we'll respond within 30 minutes.

Are skylights prone to leaks?

Older skylights and caulk-only installs, yes. Modern deck-mounted units with factory flashing kits rarely leak when installed correctly. The flashing kit interfaces with the shingle pattern in a specific sequence. Skipping that sequence is what causes most Charlotte skylight leaks. We only install with the factory kit.

Should I replace my old skylight during a re-roof?

If the unit is 15 or more years old, yes. Removing new shingles later to swap a failed skylight costs far more than replacing during the original re-roof. Glass seals, gaskets, and flashing all have a lifespan similar to shingles. Newer units are also more energy-efficient. Bundling the swap is one of the clearest long-term value plays in roofing.

Do you install solar skylights?

Yes. We install solar-powered ventilating skylights that qualify for the federal solar tax credit on most units. VELUX Solar Powered Fresh Air lines are the most popular choice in Charlotte homes. The tax credit typically covers a meaningful portion of the install. We provide paperwork for your tax preparer. Rules and percentages may shift so confirm with your tax advisor.

How long does skylight install take?

Most new skylights install in half a day when the opening already exists. A brand-new cutout that requires framing and interior drywall adds another one to two days. We typically bundle new installs into a roof replacement for efficiency. Standalone installs without a re-roof are scheduled on their own day. The unit itself is usually the longest lead item.

Will my ceiling need drywall work inside?

Yes, if we are opening a new shaft where none existed. Existing skylights being replaced usually do not require interior drywall work. New shaft installs include cutting, framing, finishing, and painting coordination. We refer a trusted trim contractor for the interior work or coordinate it on the same project schedule. Expect interior finish work to add roughly a week to the project.
